Kinds of Grapes for Winemaking

Currently, there are three basic grape classifications. There is the Vitis Vinifera, which is a famous European wine-grape family, has a generally higher sugar content than that of native wine-grapes, but much higher as compared to wild grapes. Vitis Lambrusca or native wine-grapes are indigenous to North America. These grapes do not have an excessive flavour and aroma like wild grapes. However, its acidity level can be a bit higher making its juice a bit too sharp on the taste. Then, there is the Vitis Muscadinia, which is extremely sharp tasting because of its high acid content. It also has strong assertive to pungent flavour and aroma. The good thing about native wild grapes is that they can be easily distinguished from the others, as they do not grow in clusters.
