Making Sparkling Wine
Sparkling wine is romantic and alluring, with bubbles floating on the drink. In actual production terms, it is simply carbonated wine. It undergoes the normal process of harvest, crushing and pressing. It is then blended with several base wines in order to achieve the desired flavour. After this, an additional fermentation process takes place in a tightly sealed vessel. The resulting pressure traps carbon dioxide in the liquid, thus making it fizz.

Another method is to deliberately inject carbon dioxide into the fermenting juice. Popularly known as “champagne” and “spumante”, sparkling wine can range from sweet to very dry. It is usually white or rose pink. Popular ones are Cap Classique in South Africa and Cava in Spain. Australian brand Shiraz and Italian Brachetto are well-known red sparkling wine. Germany and California are also famous for producing this bubbly drink.
