Wine Colours Variation
The colour of wine depends on the skin of the grapes from which it was made. Wine turns red when the skins of red grapes are placed in the must during the fermentation process. The pigments from the skin combine with the liquid lend the wine its colour. On the other hand, white wine can be made from both white and red grapes. With the latter, the skin is simply kept out in the process of pressing the grapes in order to prevent it from the tinting the liquid. This kind of wine is called “blanc de noirs”.

In cases when one wishes to make a rose or blush wine, the skin of red grapes is placed in the fermenting juice for a limited time period. However, this method is considered unreliable because the kind of vats used in storing the wine can affect the shade of colour that is produced. Instead, many winemakers opt to simply mix a bit of fermented red wine with fermented white wine in order to achieve the shade they desire.
